P.K. Benbow

This work of art went through many different composition ideas before I finally settled on this one. I wanted to create a metaphor for how religion always has such a big heavy-handed way of controlling people in their everyday lives. And originally it was going to be huge hands coming out of the water, called "The Hand of God."

But then when I re-watched "The Handmaid's Tale" by Margaret Atwood, and I heard them say "Under his eye," this image suddenly appeared in my mind and I knew this was how I had to draw it.

I call it the Echo because just like when we yell in a wide open space and hear that booming echo of our own voice speaking back to us, I believe that religion uses our own insecurities and self-doubts to make us feel imprisoned by the values and beliefs of others. But in reality it is our own choice to remain in that cage. Thus, the echo and the eye are both his own.
